Introduction to Chitragupta Aarti

Lord Chitragupta - भगवान चित्रगुप्त

The Chitragupta Aarti is a devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Chitragupta, the divine record keeper who maintains the accounts of all actions (karma) performed by every living being. He is the assistant of Yamaraj, the god of death and justice.

Chitragupta was created by Lord Brahma from his own body (Kaya) to keep track of the deeds of all beings. His name means "hidden picture" (Chitra = picture, Gupta = hidden), referring to the complete record of one's life that remains hidden until judgment.

He is especially revered by the Kayastha community as their progenitor deity and is worshipped for honesty, knowledge, and protection from the consequences of past misdeeds.

Twelve Sons - Twelve Branches

Chitragupta had twelve sons, who became the progenitors of twelve branches of the Kayastha community, each with distinct surnames and traditions.
