Narmada Aarti - Complete नर्मदा आरती Lyrics in Hindi & English

Introduction to Narmada Aarti

Narmada River - माँ नर्मदा

The Narmada Aarti is a devotional hymn dedicated to the sacred Narmada River, one of the seven holy rivers (Sapta Sindhu) of India. Also known as Rewa, the Narmada is considered the daughter of Lord Shiva and is the only river in India that devotees circumambulate (Parikrama).

The Narmada originates from Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh and flows westward for 1,312 km before merging with the Arabian Sea in Gujarat. Unlike other rivers, even Ganga comes to Narmada to purify herself, according to legends.

The Narmada is unique because every stone in her waters is considered a natural Shivalinga, requiring no consecration. Her banks are home to two of the twelve Jyotirlingas - Omkareshwar and Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain).

Spiritual Significance of Narmada

Daughter of Lord Shiva

According to mythology, Narmada emerged from Lord Shiva's body when he was meditating. She is called "Shankari" (daughter of Shiva) and carries Shiva's purity in her waters.

Superiority Among Rivers

It is said that while bathing in Ganga purifies sins, merely seeing Narmada grants the same benefit. The Ganga herself comes to Narmada in the form of a black cow to be cleansed of the sins she absorbs from devotees.

Natural Shivalingas

Every pebble in the Narmada is a natural Shivalinga called "Narmadeshwar" or "Banalinga." These are considered self-manifested (svayambhu) and don't need prana pratishtha (consecration).

The Only River with Parikrama

Narmada Parikrama is a unique pilgrimage where devotees walk along both banks of the river - approximately 2,600 km on foot, taking 3-4 years to complete.
