Ganesha Ashtakam

Introduction to Ganesha Ashtakam

Ganesha Ashtakam - Lord Ganesha - श्री गणेश जी

The Ganesha Ashtakam beginning with "Yatoanantashakteranantashcha Jiva" is a sacred eight-verse hymn dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the beloved elephant-headed deity who is revered as the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings. This powerful ashtakam celebrates the infinite power and divine attributes of Ganapati, invoking His grace for success, wisdom, and spiritual progress.

Lord Ganesha, also known as Vinayaka, Ganapati, and Vighneshwara, holds a unique position in Hindu worship as the deity who is invoked first before any auspicious endeavor. The Ganesha Ashtakam encapsulates the essence of devotion to this benevolent deity through eight beautifully composed verses that extol His cosmic significance, His role as the supreme intelligence, and His boundless compassion toward all beings.

Reciting this ashtakam with devotion is believed to remove all obstacles from one's path, grant intellectual clarity, and bestow divine blessings for success in all undertakings. It is especially powerful when chanted during Ganesh Chaturthi, on Wednesdays, and at the beginning of new ventures.

One who chants this auspicious eight-verse hymn eight times on the Chaturthi day for eight days shall attain the eight Siddhis (supernatural powers). One who recites it ten times daily for a month can free even a person condemned by the king — there is no doubt. ❓ Frequently Asked Questions About Ganesha Ashtakam

What is Ganesha Ashtakam?

Ganesha Ashtakam is a sacred eight-verse Sanskrit hymn from the Ganesha Purana (Upasana Khanda) dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Beginning with "Yatoanantashakteranantashcha Jeeva," it glorifies Lord Ganesha as the Supreme Brahman — the ultimate source from whom the entire universe, all living beings, the elements, the deities, and even the Vedas originate. Each verse systematically reveals Ganesha's cosmic supremacy.

Which scripture is the Ganesha Ashtakam from?

The Ganesha Ashtakam is from the Upasana Khanda (Section on Worship) of the Ganesha Purana, one of the eighteen Upa-Puranas. The Ganesha Purana is the primary Puranic scripture dedicated entirely to Lord Ganesha and contains detailed accounts of His glory, incarnations, and methods of worship. This particular ashtakam is spoken by all the assembled sages and deities.

What are the benefits of reciting Ganesha Ashtakam?

According to the Phala Shruti spoken by Lord Ganesha Himself: reciting at the three sandhyas for three days accomplishes all tasks; chanting eight times on Chaturthi for eight days grants the eight Siddhis; reciting ten times daily for a month can free even a condemned person; and chanting twenty-one times fulfills all desires including knowledge and progeny.

When is the best time to recite Ganesha Ashtakam?

The most auspicious times are during the three sandhyas (dawn, noon, and dusk), on Chaturthi Tithi (the fourth day of each lunar fortnight sacred to Ganesha), on Wednesdays, during Ganesh Chaturthi festival, and before beginning any new venture or important task. Early morning after bathing is considered especially potent.

What makes this Ashtakam unique among Ganesha hymns?

This Ashtakam is unique because it presents Lord Ganesha as the Supreme Brahman Himself — the source of the entire creation including the Trimurtis (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva), the elements, all celestial beings, and even the Vedas. Unlike most Ganesha hymns that focus on obstacle removal, this one establishes His identity as the Para Brahman (Supreme Absolute), described as "Chidananda Bhutam" (pure consciousness and bliss).

Yes, absolutely! The Ganesha Ashtakam can be recited by anyone regardless of age, gender, or spiritual background. Lord Ganesha is known as the most accessible and compassionate deity.
