❓ Frequently Asked Questions About Govinda Ashtakam

Who composed the Govinda Ashtakam and what is its significance?

The Govinda Ashtakam is attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, the great 8th-century Advaita Vedanta philosopher and saint. It is significant because it beautifully blends Vedantic philosophy with Bhakti devotion, describing Lord Govinda (Krishna/Vishnu) as the ultimate reality — both the formless Brahman and the playful cowherd of Vrindavana. Each verse reveals a paradoxical union of the Absolute and the personal God.

What does the name "Govinda" mean?

The name "Govinda" carries multiple profound meanings. It is derived from "Go" (cows, earth, senses, Vedas) and "Vinda" (protector, finder). Thus Govinda means the protector of cows, the upholder of the earth, the one who gives pleasure to the senses, and the one who is known through the Vedas. According to the Mahabharata, Lord Vishnu received this name after He recovered the earth from the depths of the cosmic ocean.

When is the best time to chant Govinda Ashtakam?
