हिंदी: प्राचीन काल में महिष्मती नगरी में राजा इन्द्रसेन का शासन था। वह एक धर्मात्मा और न्यायप्रिय राजा था। राजा का एक पुत्र था जिसका नाम महिपाल था। महिपाल बचपन से ही दुष्ट स्वभाव का था। वह जुआ खेलता था, शराब पीता था और बुरे कामों में लिप्त रहता था। राजा ने उसे समझाने की बहुत कोशिश की परंतु वह नहीं माना।

English: In ancient times, King Indrasen ruled in the city of Mahishmati. He was a righteous and just king. The king had a son named Mahipal. Mahipal had an evil nature since childhood. He gambled, drank alcohol, and was involved in bad deeds. The king tried very hard to reform him but he did not listen.

हिंदी: महिपाल के कुकर्मों से प्रजा परेशान हो गई। राजा इन्द्रसेन को अपने पुत्र को राज्य से निकालना पड़ा। महिपाल जंगल में चला गया और वहां पिशाचों का संग करने लगा। वह और भी बुरे कामों में लिप्त हो गया। राजा इन्द्रसेन को अपने पुत्र की चिंता सताने लगी। वह दुःखी रहने लगा और हमेशा महिपाल के कल्याण की प्रार्थना करता रहता था।

English: The people became troubled by Mahipal's misdeeds. King Indrasen had to exile his son from the kingdom. Mahipal went to the forest and began associating with evil spirits. He became involved in even worse deeds. King Indrasen began worrying about his son. He became sorrowful and constantly prayed for Mahipal's welfare.

हिंदी: एक दिन महर्षि गालव राजा के दरबार में आए। राजा ने अपनी सारी समस्या उनसे कही। ऋषि ने कहा, "हे राजन्! आपके पुत्र की मुक्ति के लिए माघ महीने के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का व्रत करें। इस एकादशी का नाम जया एकादशी है। यह सभी विघ्न-बाधाओं को दूर करने वाली और विजय दिलाने वाली है।"

English: One day, Sage Galava came to the king's court. The king told him all his problems. The sage said, "O King! For your son's liberation, observe the Ekadashi fast of Shukla Paksha in Magh month. This Ekadashi is called Jaya Ekadashi. It removes all obstacles and grants victory."

हिंदी: राजा इन्द्रसेन ने पूरे राज्य में जया एकादशी के व्रत की घोषणा की। सभी प्रजाजन मिलकर इस व्रत को रखने लगे। राजा ने स्वयं भी पूर्ण श्रद्धा से यह व्रत रखा और भगवान विष्णु से अपने पुत्र के कल्याण की प्रार्थना की। उन्होंने दिन-रात भगवान का जप किया और महिपाल की मुक्ति के लिए व्याकुल होकर प्रार्थना करते रहे।

English: King Indrasen announced the Jaya Ekadashi fast throughout the kingdom. All subjects together began observing this fast. The king himself also observed this fast with complete devotion and prayed to Lord Vishnu for his son's welfare. He chanted the Lord's name day and night and prayed earnestly for Mahipal's liberation.

हिंदी: जया एकादशी के व्रत के प्रभाव से महिपाल के जीवन में चमत्कारिक परिवर्तन आया। एक दिन जब वह जंगल में था, तो उसे दिव्य प्रकाश दिखाई दिया। उस प्रकाश से भगवान विष्णु प्रकट हुए और महिपाल को आशीर्वाद दिया। महिपाल का हृदय परिवर्तन हो गया। वह अपने सभी पापों से मुक्त हो गया और पवित्र जीवन जीने लगा।

English: Due to the effect of Jaya Ekadashi fast, miraculous changes came in Mahipal's life. One day when he was in the forest, he saw divine light. From that light, Lord Vishnu appeared and blessed Mahipal. Mahipal's heart was transformed. He was freed from all his sins and began living a pure life.

हिंदी: महिपाल वापस राज्य में आया और अपने पिता से क्षमा मांगी। राजा इन्द्रसेन अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुआ। उसने समझा कि यह जया एकादशी की शक्ति का चमत्कार है। पिता-पुत्र का मिलन हुआ और राज्य में खुशियां मनाई गईं। महिपाल एक आदर्श राजकुमार बन गया और बाद में एक महान राजा बना। इस प्रकार जया एकादशी ने असंभव लगने वाली विजय दिलाई।

English: Mahipal returned to the kingdom and asked forgiveness from his father. King Indrasen became extremely happy. He understood that this was the miraculous power of Jaya Ekadashi. Father and son were reunited and celebrations were held in the kingdom. Mahipal became an ideal prince and later a great king. Thus Jaya Ekadashi granted victory that seemed impossible.
