प्राचीन काल में एक राजा था जिसका नाम धृतराष्ट्र था। उसका एक पुत्र था जो बहुत दुष्ट और पापी था। राजकुमार ने अनेक पाप कर्म किए थे।
एक दिन राजकुमार की मृत्यु हो गई और वह प्रेत योनि में चला गया। राजा को बहुत दुख हुआ। वह अपने पुत्र की आत्मा की शांति के लिए अनेक यज्ञ-हवन करवाए।
एक दिन राजा को स्वप्न में अपना पुत्र दिखाई दिया। उसने कहा, "पिताजी! मैं अपने पापों के कारण प्रेत योनि में हूं। कृपया मुझे इस दुख से मुक्ति दिलाएं।"
राजा ने ऋषि-मुनियों से सलाह ली। उन्होंने कहा, "वैशाख मास की शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का व्रत करें। इसे 'मोहिनी एकादशी' कहते हैं।"
"यह व्रत भगवान विष्णु के मोहिनी अवतार को समर्पित है। इस दिन भगवान ने राक्षसों को मोहित करके देवताओं को अमृत दिलाया था।"
राजा ने पूर्ण श्रद्धा से मोहिनी एकादशी का व्रत किया। उसने रात्रि जागरण किया और भगवान मोहिनी रूप का ध्यान किया।
व्रत के प्रभाव से राजकुमार को प्रेत योनि से मुक्ति मिल गई और वह स्वर्ग लोक चला गया। तब से यह एकादशी सभी दुखों से मुक्ति दिलाने वाली मानी जाती है।
English Translation
In ancient times, there lived a king named Dhritarashtra. He had a son who was very wicked and sinful. The prince had committed many evil deeds.
One day the prince died and went to the realm of ghosts (preta yoni). The king was deeply saddened. He arranged many yajnas and homas for the peace of his son's soul.
One day the king saw his son in a dream. He said, "Father! Due to my sins, I am trapped in the ghost realm. Please help me get liberation from this suffering."
The king consulted with sages. They said, "Observe the Ekadashi fast of Vaishakha month's Shukla Paksha. It is called 'Mohini Ekadashi.'"
"This fast is dedicated to Lord Vishnu's Mohini avatar. On this day, the Lord enchanted the demons and secured nectar for the gods."
The king observed Mohini Ekadashi fast with complete devotion. He stayed awake all night and meditated on Lord's Mohini form.
Due to the power of the fast, the prince was liberated from the ghost realm and went to heaven. Since then, this Ekadashi is considered to grant liberation from all sufferings.
