Introduction to Kaupina Panchakam

The Kaupina Panchakam (కౌపీన పంచకం) is a joyous little hymn of five verses by Adi Shankaracharya celebrating the kaupina-dhari — the renunciate who owns nothing but a simple loincloth (kaupina), yet is the truly blessed and fortunate one. Each verse ends with the ringing refrain "Kaupinavantah Khalu Bhagyavantah" — "the wearer of the loincloth is indeed the fortunate one."

The renunciate revels in the sayings of Vedanta, is content with mere alms, wanders free of attachment, and rests in the bliss of the Self — richer in his renunciation than any king in his palace.

మూలం తరోః కేవలమాశ్రయన్తః
పాణిద్వయం భోక్తుమమన్త్రయన్తః |
కన్థామివ శ్రీమపి కుత్సయన్తః

స్వానన్దభావే పరితుష్టిమన్తః
