Complete Guide to Shri Govinda Damodara Stotram

Introduction to Shri Govinda Damodara Stotram

Shri Govinda Damodara Stotram - Lord Krishna - भगवान श्री कृष्ण

Shri Govinda Damodara Stotram is a beautiful and heart-melting hymn that celebrates Lord Krishna through his beloved names — Govinda (protector of cows and senses) and Damodara (one whose belly was bound with rope by Mother Yashoda). This stotram captures the enchanting childhood pastimes (leelas) of Krishna in Vrindavan and invokes the intimate personal relationship between the devotee and the divine.

Spiritual Significance of Shri Govinda Damodara Stotram

The names Govinda and Damodara represent two of Krishna's most endearing aspects — his playful childhood in Vrindavan and the supreme Lord who allows himself to be bound by his devotee's love. This stotram beautifully demonstrates the Vaishnava concept that God is not distant but intimately accessible through the power of pure devotion and love.

Frequently Asked Questions about Govinda Damodara Stotram

What is the Govinda Damodara Stotram?

The Govinda Damodara Stotram (गोविन्द दामोदर स्तोत्रम्) is an extensive, 71-verse devotional masterpiece by Bilvamangalachaarya that narrates Lord Krishna's entire divine play (leela) from birth to His departure from Vrindavan. With the beautiful refrain 'Govinda Damodara Madhaveti' repeating throughout, it is one of the longest and most comprehensive Krishna bhakti stotrams, covering His childhood pranks, butter-stealing, gopi-prema, flute-playing, and Radha-Krishna love.

Who composed the Govinda Damodara Stotram?

The Govinda Damodara Stotram was composed by Bilvamangalachaarya (also known as Lilashuka), a medieval Sanskrit poet who was formerly a hedonist but was transformed by divine grace into one of the greatest Krishna devotees. His personal journey from worldly attachment to divine love infuses every verse with authentic emotional intensity. The stotram is part of his larger work, the Krishna Karnamritam, which is considered a masterpiece of devotional poetry.

What does 'Govinda Damodara Madhaveti' mean?

'Govinda Damodara Madhaveti' combines three divine names: 'Govinda' (protector of cows/finder of the Vedas), 'Damodara' (one whose belly was tied with a rope by Mother Yashoda — symbolizing God bound by devotee's love), and 'Madhava' (husband of Lakshmi/descendant of Madhu). The suffix 'iti' means 'thus.' This refrain essentially means: 'I call upon Govinda, Damodara, Madhava' — a complete invocation of Krishna's three beloved aspects.

When should one recite the Govinda Damodara Stotram?

This stotram is ideal during Janmashtami, Gopashtami, Govardhan Puja, throughout the month of Kartik, and during all Krishna festivals. Being lengthy (71 verses), it is often recited over multiple sittings or during extended devotional sessions. It is particularly beautiful during the early morning (Mangala time) and during evening kirtan. Many Vaishnava temples include it in their standard daily liturgy.

What topics do the 71 verses cover?

The stotram systematically covers: Krishna's birth in the prison of Kamsa, His transfer to Gokula, childhood leelas (butter-stealing, Putana's destruction), Damodara leela (being tied to the mortar), killing of various asuras, Govardhan leela, rasa leela with the gopis, Radha-Krishna prema, Krishna's flute-playing on Yamuna banks, the beauty of Vrindavan, and the devotee's longing for Krishna's presence. It is essentially the complete Bhagavata Purana condensed into 71 poetic verses.
