Mahakali Chalisa Lyrics in Hindi | Shri Mahakali Chalisa with Meaning
Introduction to Shri Mahakali Chalisa | Mahakali Chalisa Meaning
The Shri Mahakali Chalisa is a devotional hymn of 40 verses dedicated to Goddess Mahakali, the fierce and protective form of the Divine Mother. Kali, meaning "The Black One" or "Time," represents the transformative power that destroys evil and ignorance.
Mahakali emerged from the forehead of Goddess Durga during the battle with demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. Her appearance is terrifying - dark complexion, disheveled hair, garland of skulls, and a protruding tongue - yet she is the most compassionate mother to her devotees.
She is worshipped extensively in Bengal, Assam, and Odisha. The Dakshineswar Kali Temple and Kalighat Temple in Kolkata are among the most famous. Kali Puja during Diwali in Eastern India is one of the biggest festivals dedicated to her.
Fierce Divine Form of Mahakali | Kali Mata Swaroop
Destroyer of Ego
Kali's fearsome form destroys the ego and attachment. Her dark color represents the ultimate reality beyond all forms and qualities. She is the void from which creation emerges and into which it dissolves.
Standing on Shiva
The iconic image of Kali standing on Lord Shiva represents Shakti (energy/power) and Shiva (consciousness). Without Shakti, Shiva is Shava (corpse). Together they represent the dynamic and static aspects of creation.
Garland of Skulls
The 50-51 skulls in her garland represent the 50-51 letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, signifying that Kali is the source of all language, knowledge, and mantras.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About Mahakali Chalisa
What is Mahakali Chalisa and who is Mahakali?
Mahakali Chalisa is a 40-verse devotional hymn dedicated to Goddess Mahakali, the supreme form of Kali and one of the principal Mahavidyas. She represents the ultimate cosmic power of time and transformation. The Chalisa describes her origin from Goddess Durga's forehead during the battle with demons, her ten-armed form, and her supreme protective powers.
When should one recite Mahakali Chalisa?
Mahakali Chalisa is most powerful when recited on Tuesdays and Saturdays, during Kali Puja (Diwali), on Amavasya (new moon night), and during Gupt Navaratri. Nighttime recitation is considered especially potent. It is also recited during times of crisis, when facing powerful enemies, and during Kaal Ratri (seventh night of Navaratri).
What are the benefits of chanting Mahakali Chalisa?
Chanting Mahakali Chalisa provides the most powerful protection against evil forces, black magic, and destructive enemies. It destroys deep-rooted karmic obstacles, removes all forms of fear, and grants immense spiritual strength. Mahakali's grace is especially sought during the most desperate situations where other remedies have failed, as she is the ultimate destroyer of evil.
What is the difference between Kali and Mahakali?
While Kali represents time and change, Mahakali is the supreme cosmic form of Kali — more powerful, more encompassing, and representing the absolute dissolution of the universe. Mahakali is described with ten heads, ten arms, and ten feet in the Devi Mahatmya. She is the origin from which other Kali forms emerge. The Mahakali Chalisa specifically invokes this supreme form.
Can Mahakali Chalisa be recited by anyone?
Yes, the Mahakali Chalisa can be recited by anyone with sincere devotion and respectful intention. While Mahakali Sadhana in Tantric traditions may require initiation, the Chalisa is a purely devotional prayer. Approaching Mahakali with love and surrender is the key — she is ultimately the most compassionate mother who destroys only that which harms her children.
