भगवान कृष्ण ने कहा, "हे राजन! इस एकादशी का नाम 'पापांकुशा एकादशी' है। यह सभी पापों को नष्ट करने वाली है।"
"प्राचीन काल में फाल्गुन नाम का एक राजा था। वह बहुत पापी था और अधर्म के कार्य करता था। उसके पापों के कारण उसके राज्य में अकाल पड़ा।"
राजा को बड़ा दुख हुआ। वह एक ऋषि के पास गया और बोला, "हे मुनिवर! मेरे पापों के कारण प्रजा कष्ट में है। कृपया मुझे इससे मुक्ति का उपाय बताएं।"
ऋषि ने कहा, "हे राजन! आश्विन शुक्ल एकादशी का व्रत करो। इसे पापांकुशा एकादशी कहते हैं। यह सभी पापों को नष्ट कर देती है।"
राजा ने पूर्ण श्रद्धा से व्रत किया। उसने रात भर जागकर भगवान विष्णु की आराधना की और अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा मांगी।
व्रत के प्रभाव से राजा के सभी पाप नष्ट हो गए। राज्य में वर्षा हुई और खुशहाली लौट आई। तब से यह एकादशी पाप नाशक मानी जाती है।
English Translation
Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna, "O Lord! What is the glory of the Ekadashi of Ashwin month's Shukla Paksha?"
Lord Krishna said, "O King! This Ekadashi is called 'Papankusha Ekadashi'. It destroys all sins."
"In ancient times, there was a king named Phalgun. He was very sinful and engaged in unrighteous activities. Due to his sins, drought struck his kingdom."
The king was deeply saddened. He went to a sage and said, "O great sage! Due to my sins, the people are suffering. Please tell me the remedy for liberation from this."
The sage said, "O King! Observe the fast of Ashwin Shukla Ekadashi. It is called Papankusha Ekadashi. It destroys all sins."
The king observed the fast with complete devotion. He stayed awake all night, worshipped Lord Vishnu, and asked forgiveness for his sins.
Due to the power of the fast, all the king's sins were destroyed. It rained in the kingdom and prosperity returned. Since then, this Ekadashi is considered a destroyer of sins.
