What is a Janam Kundli?

A Janam Kundli (also called a birth chart or horoscope) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), this snapshot is drawn as a diagram of twelve sections called houses (bhavas), within which the nine planets (Navagraha) and twelve zodiac signs (rashis) are placed.

The point rising on the eastern horizon at your birth is your Ascendant (Lagna) — it becomes the 1st house and anchors the entire chart. This is why an accurate birth time and place are essential: even a few minutes can shift the Lagna and change the reading.
